Matt Kuchar’s win at the 2019 Sony Open in Hawaii in January was his ninth PGA TOUR victory and 100th career top-10. He finished at 22-under 258, the third-lowest total in Waialae history behind the PGA TOUR record of 253 by Justin Thomas in 2017 and Jimmy Walker's 72-hole score of 257 when he won in 2015. The Sony Open in Hawaii is the gift that keeps on giving however, long after the TOUR has moved on from the islands. Tournament host Friends of Hawaii Charities distributed a record $1.2 million in charitable grants from proceeds raised at the 2019 Sony Open with support from its long-time charity partner The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc., which matches funds raised at tournament dollar-for-dollar; title sponsor Sony Corporation; host site Waialae Country Club; and supporter Hawaii Tourism Authority. Among the 150 charity grant recipients are community-based, non-profit organizations which operate programs for Hawaii’s children, women, elderly and its impoverished.
The first full-field PGA TOUR event of the year, the Sony Open is the largest charity golf event in Hawaii and has raised over $19 million dollars for over 350 local not-for-profits since 1999. In 2018, the PGA TOUR and Sony announced the extension of their partnership by another four years, through 2022, tying it for the third-longest tenured title sponsor on the TOUR. The tournament has been held at Waialae Country Club since its debut in 1965. In 1999, Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc., became the host organization of the tournament with Sony as title sponsor. The following year, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc., became the Sony Open’s charity partner.
