The 2009 Sony Open in Hawaii PGA TOUR tournament signals the launch of full-field events on the PGA TOUR annually. 144 PGA TOUR golf pros tee it up January 12-18, 2009 to compete for a share of the $5,400,000 purse, rewarding $972,000 to the winner. Waialae Country Club golf course with Pacific oceanside greens and brisk trade winds is the historic venue for competitive international golf professionals annually. Waialae’s course has hosted the event for the past 43 years.

The Sony Open in Hawaii celebrated its 10th Anniversary tournament in January, 2008, with an auspicious wire-to-wire victory by Korea’s celebrated champion, K.J. Choi. winning his seventh PGA TOUR title. Choi’s wire-to-wire triumph, a 14-under par 266, was his seventh PGA TOUR title. He became the third outright wire-to-wire winner in Sony Open history, joining Paul Azinger (2000) and Howard Twitty (1993). The win also gave Choi a PGA TOUR title for the fourth consecutive year, a mark matching or bettering records set by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh. Choi’s 14-under- par victory was 3 strokes better than Rory Sabbatini of South Africa and 4-strokes ahead of 2002 Sony Open’s charismatic champion, Jerry Kelly. Golf enthusiasts and neophyte spectators enjoyed a prime-time experience complete with Sony Expo, gourmet greenside food and Jumbotron drama at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
