SBS OPEN AT TURTLE BAY 2009
Friends of Hawaii Charities, Charity Designee

This past February, Annika Sorenstam made her return to the winner’s circle with a record-setting 70th LPGA career victory at the SBS OPEN at Turtle Bay.  This dramatic launch of the 2008 LPGA tournament season at Turtle Bay Resort, the spectacular surf and golf destination on Oahu’s North Shore, was home to Sorenstam’s landmark victory in mid-February on the championship par-72 Arnold Palmer-designed course. A 10-under par 206 54-hole score put her two strokes ahead of a trio of pros, Laura Diaz, Angela Park and Russy Gulyanamitta.  Sorenstam, winless on the LPGA Tour since September, 2006, won $165,000 as tournament champion in her first appearance at the $1,100,000 2008 event. She rolled in a birdie on the 16th and a 24-foot birdie at 17, to add the proper punctuation mark to an exciting 10-under par 206 finish.

SBS, Korea’s largest independent television network and production company, brings the fifth annual SBS OPEN to Turtle Bay February 9-14, 2009. Drama on the green has been a hallmark of the event that kicks off the official LPGA Tour season annually and boasts a 2009 purse of $1,200,000 and a champion’s prize of $180,000.
